Late Periods

Teenage days are very exciting in ones life. They bring a feeling of being almost a grownup and being no more a kid. There is an intense feeling of exploring relationships and sex which make the teens so excited. However, teenage is also a period of intense hormonal changes that as a matter of fact are the cause of all the excitement as well as have their own effects that leave the teenagers confused, anxious, tired, angry and a host of other such feelings.

When it comes to teenage girls, the hormonal changes can be more pronounced. The onset of puberty is part of the teenage when a girl begins having her menstrual cycles. Just the beginning of menstruation leaves a young girl with a strange feeling as it is hard to understand how one can live with periods having every month. A few days before the periods begin, her body starts showing symptoms of fatigue and cramps after which the periods themselves may last a week with some more symptoms after the periods are over. This leaves little time before it is time for the symptoms to reappear before the next cycle.

The stress of the changes in the body, coupled with the stress at school, in the family, amongst the friends and that from a desire to perform academically, may cause further hormonal imbalance in her body. One of the most visible and common impact of the hormonal imbalance in teenage girls is irregular periods or late periods. A teenage girl may get her periods delayed by weeks before her next menstrual cycle starts.

Besides the stress, there are other reasons for a girl to have late periods.

Change in lifestyle: If the body clock is disrupted by not maintaining a proper sleep cycle, which can be due to a variety of reasons, it can potentially delay the periods every time or make the overall periods quite irregular.

Medicines: Sometimes teen girls need to be on some medication for one reason or the other. These medications also play their role in making the menstrual cycle irregular.

Polycystic ovary syndrome: The polycystic syndrome is a hormonal disorder that can enlarge the ovaries with cysts on the outer edges. The polycystic syndrome can cause irregular menstrual cycles and may pose difficulties when the girl tries to become pregnant. Other impact of polycystic syndrome may include obesity and growth of facial hair.

Body weight: A body weight that is above or below the normal weight for a girl, can prevent ovulation and therefore delay or even stop the menstrual cycle. This condition normally gets better once the body weight is brought back in the normal range. This is also one of the reasons, why the teen girls are discouraged from excessive dieting in order to lose weight and become extremely skinny.

Pregnancy: If a girl has been sexually active, there might be a chance that she is pregnant which would cause the periods to stop till the baby is born. If you think you might be pregnant, you should get a pregnancy test done.
