Teenage Independence

Of course, no one likes restrictions. The teenage girls and the teenage boys who are on the verge of stepping into adulthood hate restrictions more than anyone else. The parents and the teachers impose restrictions. The peer group amongst the teens, may pose restrictions by limiting you who you can be with. The more “powerful” ones attract the attention of the people you might want to be with. The lack of financial resources to support oneself impose an immense amount of restrictions on the teenagers who are desperate to be independent.

How can one become independent? Well, if you have the financial, emotional and physical security, no one might be able to stop you from being independent. The more you have these securities the more independent one can be. Therefore, the instead of dreaming about being independent, you can work on to improve the security of each of these types and before you know it you would be successful and independent and would be able to do whatever you might want to.

The problem is you need all three – financial, emotional and physical securities. When at home, you have a home to live in, the parents to protect and take care of you when you are sick or need some help. The parents also can give the money that you need to grow up. If you lack even on of the types of the securities mentioned above, you might not be able to become independent.

If you have a lot of money but are not smart enough, the people around you will usurp all that you have before you know it. Money attracts friends who are the friends of the money not yours. As soon as the money is gone, you would be standing alone totally vulnerable.

If you have money, you might be able to buy physical security but you cannot buy emotional security. Without the physical security of a home, you might be literally vulnerable to the crimes around you. People who run away from home in an effort to become independent, and to get away from the restrictions from the parents, often end up being exploited by pimps and become subjects of sexual abuse. Those who get pushed into prostitution, may not be able to get out from that life for a long long time, if at all.

The emotional security comes from mental development of a person. The protection of a home and the parents, provides the time to become mentally grown up and trained.

If we look at it, you become mentally grown up if you are educated. Education spawns talents and success that results in the money that can help you become independent. Some teenagers leave their homes in a spurt of anger and realize their folly as soon as they regain their senses. Running away from home is not a way to become independent. If you can muster up the securities you need, your parents would themselves help you move out of their home and settle in one of your own to follow the dreams of your life.
